How to Assemble the Perfect Burger
Date: Tuesday 24th May 2022
It’s been one of the biggest debates on the internet since the Google emoji controversy in 2017… “What is the correct way to assemble a hamburger?”. Since it is International Burger Day on 28th May, we’ve consolidated some of the most popular opinions on the correct way of stacking a burger… it is the order seen in most restaurants (not in Gordon Ramsay's though!) and using the most standard set of ingredients, patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo.
First, an important tip is to make sure you have your ingredients lined up for assembling before the patties are done so that you can enjoy the burger while it’s sizzling hot!
Sauce (Mayo, Ketchup, Applesauce etc.)
Nobody likes a dry burger, so it’s important to be generous with whatever sauce you have chosen. Start by spreading a generous amount directly on both top and bottom buns when you put your burger together. This acts as a glue that holds the ingredients together and oozes out as you take a bite.
Cheese Slices
So, the big debate in 2017 about the Google emoji was “should the cheese slice go on top of the patty or below? “. It really depends on personal preference, but most cooks put it on top of the patty as they grill them. This melts the cheese and blends its aroma with that of the meat, creating a beautiful, cheesy patty that drips out of the burger.

Patty
Now that you’ve cooked the patties with cheese on top, this goes directly on the bottom bun. The reason for this is so that when you take a bite, the taste of the meat is directly on your tongue, and you get the most flavour.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes have a lot of juices and tends to be very watery, it’s best for them to be separated from any of the buns to avoid the bread from becoming soggy. Place them just on top of the patty for a burst of tomato freshness that balances the meat juices.
Lettuces
Iceberg lettuces is the best variety to put in a burger because it adds a lot of crunchiness, and its size makes it easy to assemble and act as a barrier between the juices and the buns. Put this as the top layer and let the edges hang out like some 70s bangs.
Finally, slam the other bun on top and you’ve made yourself a classic whopper burger! Do you agree with this order? Let us know in the comments of our Instagram or Facebook post.
